Styrol-Butadien-Styrol-Copolymer (SBS)

Styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) is a thermoplastic elastomer belonging to the styrene block copolymer (SBC) family. Its unique block structure combines rubber-like elasticity with thermoplastic processability, resulting in excellent adhesion, flexibility, and low-temperature performance. These properties make SBS a versatile material for applications such as pressure-sensitive hot-melt adhesives and bitumen modification in waterproof roofing membranes.

Unique Properties

  • Elasticity: They exhibit excellent elasticity and resilience, making them suitable for flexible and stretchable applications.
  • Adhesion: SBS copolymers have good adhesive properties, enabling them to bond well with various substrates even at low temperatures.
  • Thermoplastic processing: They can be processed using thermoplastic processing methods such as extrusion, injection moulding and film blowing.
  • Flexibility: They are highly flexible, even at low temperatures, and are therefore suitable for applications that require flexibility.
  • Solvent compatibility: SBS copolymers are compatible with a wide range of solvents, which facilitates the formulation of adhesives and coatings.

Applications SBS copolymer

Adhesives & Sealants

SBS copolymer is widely used in pressure-sensitive and hot-melt adhesive formulations where a balance of elasticity, strength, and durability is required. The SBS block copolymer structure provides good cohesive strength combined with excellent flexibility and adhesion to various substrates. SBS is particularly suitable for applications that require long-term performance, temperature resistance, and mechanical stability, such as construction adhesives, industrial ta

Applications SBS copolymer

Bitumen and Asphalt Applications

In bitumen and asphalt modification, SBS copolymer significantly improves elasticity, flexibility, and resistance to cracking over a wide temperature range. When blended with bitumen, SBS enhances deformation recovery, thermal stability, and aging resistance, resulting in improved durability and service life. SBS-modified bitumen is widely used in waterproof roofing membranes, paving applications, and other infrastructure systems where high performance under mechanical stress and temperature variation is required.

SIS vs SBS vs SEBS

SIS (Styrene-Isoprene-Styrene):

  • Thermoplastic elastomer with polyisoprene mid-block
  • Soft, elastic, excellent tack and low-temperature flexibility
  • Ideal for adhesives, hot-melts, and coatings
  • Less heat and UV resistant compared to SEBS

SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene):

  • Polybutadiene mid-block instead of isoprene
  • Good elasticity and abrasion resistance
  • Common in asphalt modification, adhesives, and sealants
  • Slightly lower clarity and odor than SIS

SEBS (Styrene-Ethylene-Butylene-Styrene):

  • Hydrogenated SBS for improved thermal and UV stability
  • Excellent weathering, chemical resistance, and flexibility
  • Often used in soft-touch coatings, medical devices, and automotive parts
  • More expensive and less tacky than SIS
