What is Ammonium Polyphosphate (APP)?

Ammonium Polyphosphate (APP) is a phosphorus-based, halogen-free flame retardant used in coatings, plastics, adhesives, sealants and construction materials. APP acts as an intumescent flame retardant, forming a protective char layer when exposed to heat or fire. This barrier reduces heat transfer, delays ignition and slows flame spread, helping improve fire performance without significantly affecting processing characteristics.

APP is widely used in passive fire protection systems, intumescent coatings, engineering plastics and wire & cable applications. Its combination of fire performance, low smoke generation and compatibility with halogen-free formulations makes it a preferred choice for modern flame-retardant systems.

At De Monchy, we supply a range of APP grades for indoor and outdoor applications, supporting customers in achieving fire safety and performance objectives.

Why Choose Our Flame Retardants?

Our portfolio combines performance, sustainability, and formulation flexibility.

Key Benefits

  • High-performance flame retardant additives for multiple industries
  • Advanced ammonium polyphosphate and phosphorus technologies
  • Efficient APP based flame retardant systems for intumescent applications
  • Durable halogen free flame retardant solutions
  • Support for sustainable and environmentally friendly fire retardants
  • Excellent compatibility in coatings, plastics, adhesives, and sealants
  • Low smoke generation and improved fire protection performance
  • Suitable grades for indoor and outdoor applications

How does Ammonium Polyphosphate (APP) work?

When exposed to heat, APP decomposes and releases phosphoric acid, which promotes the formation of a stable carbon-rich char layer. As temperatures increase, this layer expands to create an insulating barrier that:

  • Reduces heat transfer
  • Delays ignition and flame spread
  • Lowers the release of combustible gases
  • Reduces heat release during combustion

This intumescent mechanism makes APP particularly effective in coatings, passive fire protection systems, engineering plastics and wire & cable applications.
